“‘Centuries ago, the Mississippi River’s only waterfall thundered right through what would become downtown Minneapolis. Owámniyomni—or St. Anthony Falls, as it would eventually be named—was an important meeting place for local Indigenous peoples. Europeans dammed the falls around 1850, and a lot’s changed since then. But starting in 2026, the riverfront is being returned to a more natural state: Nearly 8 acres around the Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock and Dam will be returned to Indigenous stewardship, transformed back into a meeting spot for the Indigenous community and Minnesotans to connect with history and nature.  ”
