“On behalf of Open Rivers, I [Kachina Yeager] had an extended conversation with my mom and sister about their work at Owámniyomni Okhodayapi—a Minneapolis-based, Dakota-led nonprofit currently working to transform five acres of land at the site of the falls, a place that has been changed dramatically by the settler history and contemporary practices it has been subjected to. Currently, the falls are surrounded by the industrial remnants of Minneapolis’ riverfront mill and lumber district, including the recently decommissioned Upper St. Anthony Falls Lock & Dam, and the ongoing bustle of the city’s downtown.”
