Programming at Owámniyomni

Programming is at the heart of our work to restore and revitalize Dakota culture at Owámniyomni. Through public events, cultural education, and creative engagement, we bring Dakota presence and values to the forefront in a place that has long been central to our people. Our programming is designed not only to inform, but to reconnect community—both Indigenous and non-Indigenous—with the living culture and history of this place.

From guided interpretive tours that share Dakota stories and perspectives, to our lifeways video series that highlights traditional practices like cooking, games and water stewardship, each program centers Dakota knowledge and experience. Every offering is a step toward cultural restoration, healing and visibility in our homelands.

Dakota Lifeways Video Series

This video series was created to connect Dakota people—both near and far—to our work at Owámniyomni, ensuring that those who live away from our project site can still engage with the land, culture, and community. Through traditional practices, stories, and teachings, we share Dakota ways of life, from cooking to games and history. This series also serves as an invitation for non-Native people to learn and build relationships based on respect and understanding. By sharing these lifeways, we strengthen connections across distance and foster a deeper sense of community for all. New videos will be released based on the changing seasons.

Self Guided Audio Tour

In 2024 Owámniyomni Okhódayapi launched a self-guided walking tour of Owámniyomni. This tour gives visitors a look at the site from a Dakota perspective, and includes written and oral Dakota language.

Signs on site act as ‘stops’ on the tour where you can scan QR codes to hear Dakota language being spoken. This tour brings a Dakota presence to the site that hasn’t been seen since the industrialization of the Falls.

If you’re unable to make it down to the site to take the tour you can virtually walk the tour at the button below.

Run With Respect

In partnership with ReNew Earth Running, Owámniyomni Okhódayapi hosts a casual 5K run series called Run with Respect. This series calls on community members to run with the land instead of on the land, to care for land and water as a relatives, and to develop their own reciprocal relationship with the River.

We take time to honor Ȟaȟa Wakpá (the Mississippi River) and discuss the significance of Owámniyomni (St. Anthony Falls) before departing on an informal 5k run along the riverfront.
